Understanding Key Terms in the Clean Economy

Navigating the clean economy can feel overwhelming, especially with all the new terms being used. To help, we’ve compiled a list of key terms and their definitions so you can better understand the language of sustainability and clean energy.

Clean Energy: Power from renewable sources like wind and solar that don’t harm the environment. Nova Scotia is aiming for 80% clean energy by 2030!

Climate Change: The long-term shift in weather patterns due to human activities like burning fossil fuels. It’s why we’re seeing more floods, wildfires and extreme heat.

Environmental Racism: When polluting industries are placed near Indigenous, Black and other marginalized communities, negatively impacting their health and environment.

Circular Economy: A system that focuses on reducing waste and reusing materials by keeping products and resources in use for as long as possible.

Green Jobs: Employment that contributes to preserving or restoring the environment, from renewable energy positions to roles in sustainable agriculture and conservation.

Net-Zero: The balance between the amount of greenhouse gases produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere, achieving a neutral impact.

Energy Efficiency: Using less energy to perform the same task, which reduces waste and lowers emissions—think LED bulbs and well-insulated buildings.

Decarbonization: The process of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions through cleaner energy sources and more efficient technology.

Sustainable Transportation: Methods of travel that reduce environmental impact, including electric vehicles, public transit, biking and walking.

Electrification: Replacing fossil fuel-based systems with electric alternatives, such as using heat pumps instead of gas furnaces.
